We had our first official meeting today out at Basecamp today! We began with some basics: canoe flipping, our first portage, knots, and maps. Everyone was able to take their first crack at flipping a canoe. As I remembered when I first began, it isn’t easy, but it was a great challenge that the crew will look back on trail and remember. We portaged to the Tennis Courts (about .3 miles according to Strava) Then the crew learned four knots that are important to know on trail: The square, bowline, slip, and double-half hitch knots. We talked about expectations from me and for each other, then ended with a map activity where the crew took all of our maps and had to figure out how they all fit together, then seeing the area where they will be spending a month this summer. Looking forward to getting out and paddling next week!
