We finalized our route today! The gals picked out their tentative campsites for the month, found UTMs, and decided to commit to the Bloodvein River. Some exciting plans were implemented into the route such as cliff jumping, visiting Fourth of July Falls, resupplying at Dogskin Lake, and conquering the Obukowin and Big Sas Portages! 🌲 🛶
Next, we freshened up on our knots. Important ones to remember: square knot, bowline, double half-hitch, taut-line hitch, and truckers hitch (using a slip knot). We brought these knots together to create a nice line between two trees to place our tarp over. The crew learned how to securely tie the sides of a tarp using sticks and rocks. With that, we also did a quick shakedown of how to set up tents and how to properly take them down. Tents are our precious shelter for the month so it’s important to keep them nice and clean. ⛺️
The other skill we worked on today is packing our kettle pack. This is where we carry our pots/pans, cooking utensils, water filters, stoves, tarps, the grate, repair kit, etc, etc. On trail, it will be Quartmaster’s job to make sure this pack is packed to perfection. It is challenging to get it to stand on its own while also making it even enough to fit in a canoe. They did a great job for their first time packing it!
That’s a wrap. We didn’t get any action shots today but here’s a crew selfie.
